landscape first assignment

Some photographs of the four wheeler trails by my house for Tom's landscape course.
First black and white images I've made in a while. Definitely made me miss it.

I need to get this book.

,
In 1968, just before Easy Rider roared its way into American consciousness, Danny Lyon published The Bikeriders. A seminal work of modern photojournalism, this landmark collection of photographs and interviews documents the abandon and risk implied in the name of the gang Lyon belonged to: the Chicago Outlaw Motorcycle Club. With images and interviews that are as raw, alive, and dramatic today as they were three decades ago, this new edition includes startling new images: 15 additional black-and-white photographs and 14 color prints--long thought missing--of works originally published in black-and-white. With a new introduction by the author, The Bikeriders rides again, capturing like never before the dawn of the counterculture era.

7 days

So the weather is beginning to worry me a little. I haven't picked up rain gear yet and it's looking like I should probably get on that. I just purchased a windshield so that might help a little. I'll post more later, class is about to start.

8 days

So the count down starts! 8 days until Jd and I leave for FL!

During my crit for Contemporary Color Landscape,
we looked at google maps as part of our conversation
and looked at a few places from this eye level view.
For my Wilderness project I created a website that
was intended to make the viewer question
their own definition of “wilderness”.
I don’t know if it was completely successful in creating this question
because of how I define wilderness.
In my opinion wilderness is definitely by
how much you know the place and
know how to live or exist in that place.

"my wilderness project"

Anyway this question brought us to google maps
in this eye level view and
instantly I thought about my road trip.

I ordered two cable releases for my cameras for this trip.
And I'm beginning to worry that they
aren't going to get here in time.
I want to some how attach my camera
behind me on my motorcycle
set it up looking to the right or left as I ride.
I wanted to use the cable release to shoot as I was riding.
Capture people driving in cars next to me,
or jd riding and anything else
that might be interesting on the road.
I also wanted to set one up for Jd
to be able to shoot so I would have some images
of myself on our trip.

Fallen Riders

"Memorial Wall at Big Falls"

This is an addition to my Junior Seminar project.
I'm happy with this shot
other then the car reflected in the wall.
I'm going to have to go back
and shoot it one day that
there are a few bikes around.
I think it would make the image
ten times stronger for my series.

As far as sequencing goes,
I'm not sure where I see this image in the series.
I'm thinking towards the end but not the last image.
After seeing Robert Frank's "The American",

I really want to make sure my sequencing makes sense
and is done for a reason

HOG article

"Life changes with your first Harley. Your fellow riders, your new friends, each understands what the others feel when pressing the start button. Miles traveled with your children or with the person you love on a Harley are unmatched. To feel the excitement in the hearts of the people most dear to you... makes your own heart soar. "

This is 100% true and it's just a small part of
what I want to express with my Junior Seminar project.

Jacksonville Weather

"Weather in Jacksonville, FL"

God I hope the weather is like this or warmer in march!!!

So this morning I started looking at traffic for our road trip to FL.
We are going to be leaving Raleigh, NC
around 8am and it looks like we won't really hit traffic.

Robert Frank "The American" at the NGA

Robert Frank's Exhibit in the National Gallery of Art

I had a chance to view this exhibition today and it blew me away.
Robert Frank's "The American" is beautiful sequenced
with four sections, all starting with an image of the American flag.
This series truly captures American people and the place at the time.
Above are a few of my favorite images from the series.
I don't think that individually these images say
what Frank says with the complete body of work,
but they are my favorites as individual images.

In the middle of the exhibition, they show a few of his contact sheets.
It was great to see how he edited down to 83 from around 28,000.
Seeing his editing and sequencing
definitely made me reevaluate my own sequencing.
It was also helpful to see how he cropped some of his images
and how much of an impact that made on the image and the series.
This made me think about how I shoot and my reaction to
the initial image on the contact sheet or on the back of the digital camera.
Sometime I feel like what I see is what I get,
but really its what I have to edit even further.

Robert Frank really put his grant from the
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to amazing use.

An Unexpected Start

"Charm City Choppers"

"George"

So today I set out to start working on my Junior Seminar Project.
I stopped in Charm City Choppers to try and
talk to some of the people who worked there.
I walked in expecting to meet a few people and
tell them who I am and what I want to do then
set up a time to come back and shoot.
Well as soon as I said I wanted to take images of the guys working,
I immediately got invited into the back.
I was really surprised;
I definitely wasn’t expecting to be that welcomed.
I met a really interesting man named George and
got to know a little about him and
how he got involved in building and working on motorcycles.
I'm still trying to figure out what direction I want to take this series,
but I’m beginning to show theses people as individuals
and as a part of the culture.
This is definitely a project that is
completely out of my comfort zone.
Any input is more then welcome.

forever ago and it still hasn't showed up.

I'm hoping that it's because
i ordered the signed copy.

This is part of my project

I'm not exactly sure if it fits the assignment
but its a start.

My Molto Expressivo piece
was mentioned in an article on
The Baltimore Symphony's Website.

MICA Students Collaborate with the BSO

First image I've made for my
Contemporary Color Landscape Course.
This photo was taken on the new route 43
going into Chase and B.Q.
This road was cut through
a few 100 acres of woods
that until a few years ago was untouched.
The buildings you see in the background
are just a few of the new developments
along this road that are
taking up the remaining woods.

So this place rocks.
Went there over the weekend and
fell in love with their chocolate milk stout.
If you ever get a chance to have one,
you'll know why.
